Switch tile is not updating when activated from another device/Alexa?

dhirtle 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago 4

If I turn on a light via Amazon Echo or via another app (like Belkin's Wemo app), the switch tile on the panel is not updating to the "on" position. When you press the tile, it doesn't turn the light on at that point (because it's already on) it just make the tile indicate that it's on. Press the tile again and it will turn off as expected. Seems like it just doesn't know that the other app turned it on.

Also, same thing happens when turning a switch off via another device or app.

Answer

Your observations are correct... but this is not an ActionTiles bug; but we agree it is an inconvenience!

It is up to the Things to inform SmartThings that their state has changed. Once SmartThings is informed, ActionTiles receives an Event to update the Tile(s) on your Panels.

Some Things (device types) do a really good job of keeping SmartThings "instantly" posted with their Status, regardless of where the state change command came from (Echo, non-SmartThings App (WeMo, Hue, IFTTT), or even physical touch, etc.).

Other device types don't do such a good job. It's possible that SmartThings could code the DTH (device type handler) better to improve them, but in other cases, it's just not available in the vendor's API. In some cases, people run SmartApps to poll the device every few minutes, to "ask" for its status. Polling is discouraged because the vast majority of the time there has not been a state change, and so that is just a lot of wasted work for the SmartThings Cloud!

The best recommendation we can give is avoid this inconvenience is to:

  • Use only "Works With SmartThings"™ certified devices.
  • I'm not sure WWST certification requires all devices to report their state changes promptly... most, but not all.
  • Avoid the use of 3rd party Apps on devices that happen to not inform SmartThings of their state changes from 3rd party Apps.

Ecobee thermostat questions

I have an Ecobee3 connected to my SmartThings hub and have created two tiles. One tile for the dual thermostat and another for the remote sensor. When I use the tile to adjust the temperature the ecobee responds almost immediately, as seen through the ecobee app. However if I use the ecobee app to set the temperature back to its original setting the tile does not update unless I force an refresh through the SmartThings app.

  1. Is there a tile thing to force the SmartThings refresh?
  2. I cannot find a tile thing to view the main ecobee sensor. I have the remote sensor tile already added. How do I add the main sensor?

Change Thermostat Mode (heat, cool, off)

John Miele 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago 28

I have two CT-30 thermostats and they show up in Action Tiles just fine but I have no way of changing the mode or fan setting Heat/Cool/Off Fan On/Auto. I've seen on the Smart Tiles where people have switches put together but i think it would be ideal to have a drop down list or popup with options. I don't think a dedicated button would be necessary as it may lead to inadvertently changing the setting. Also, on the dual Thermostat tile, the mode shows idle when smartthing shows heating/cooling.

Answer

Wow. Looks great! Thanks for adding this functionality. One less reason to fall back to other apps.

Timer display Tile - Capability "Timed Session"

rontalley 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago 1

I am looking for a way to have a countdown or count-up timer displayed in ActionTiles that is direct correlation with a webCoRE Piston or any other App that can send out timer or schedule information.

I have many Pistons that are on Timers and instead of going in the App and then opening up whatever app that has the timer, I would like to mount a Table on the Wall with ActionTiles and easily have access to various timers.

Example 1. If back door has not been opened for 5 hours Then Nag the family:

webCoRE sets an internal timer counting up to 5 Hours

Action Tile Displays

Potty Time

5:35pm

Example 2. If dryer stays on for 1hr 30minutes then shut off and Nag the family

Action Tile Displays

Dryer

30 minutes and counting upward to 1:30

Example 3. If Kitchen Lights are on and Motion is inactive Then wait 3 minutes Turn Off

Action Tile Displays

Kitchen Lights

-1:15 and counting down

How to control my garage door opener (Gogogate)

Hi there,

Looking for ideas. I have a gogogate controlling my gate and garagedoor. I use IFTT and some virtual switches in Smartthings to make them work together. Basically when the virtual switch is ON, IFTT will open the gate. IF Closed, IFTT will close. I can add the switch to actiontile but if someone closes the gate not using actiontile it does not go back to the previous state so next time I want to use it I have to press the button to turn the switch "off" before I can turn it "on" again to open the gate.

Any suggestion to improve this?

Show Energy Cost of Power Outlet

vick s. 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Den 7 years ago 4

Hello,

So I would really love to know how much a certain light or lights is costing me and have a question.

would it be possible to add something like this:

User when adding a new tile say a light switch, enters the watts of the given light bulb or bulbs or whatever, then enters average cost of their electricity say .12 cents a kilowatt

  • User enters 1 time electricity cost of .12 cents a killowatt
  • User adds a switch or whatever
  • Master bedroom (has 4 light bulbs each 10 watts ) so user enters 40 watts
  • now action tiles will calculate amount of cost and show daily weekly lifetime and so on cost of master bedroom lights

This would be amazing since it would only have to be entered once by the user and user will constantly have a ballpark idea of their homes electric usage / cost .

Honestly i would love love to know how much my kids leaving their lights on all the time is costing me lol , or even better how much my outside lights being on all night are costing me and say turning them off 30 minutes sooner or later would save me how much ?

Sorry for long post

Thank you ActionTiles team your product is amazing and i have the purchased license!

Things cloning details from other Tilesets

snowmansmartie 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago 3

Hi all,

I'm very new to the ActionTiles App, like 10mins new!!

I have created my 1st Panel with several Tilesets so far.

I have a Tileset for Battery Monitoring for Sensors and another Tileset for Temperatures from Sensors.

I have noticed that when I setup the 2nd Temps Tileset it cascaded the information from the Battery Monitoring Tileset.

Is there a way to stop this as I want to monitor everything separately.  Yes I am OCD with these sorts of things ;).

If there is a way around this or to stop it, any help would be greatly welcomed.

Cheers

Set Switch Tile state without sending physical change?

I'm not sure if this is a DTH or Tile type. I want a virtual tile (let's say switch) that controls multiple device (Easy with webCoRE), but if one of the devices that is controlled by that virtual switch changes state, I want the Action Tile to change state to On (without turning on the other devices controlled by simulated switch) thus allowing that device to turn off with simulated switch.

I hope I'm making sense

Answer

Hi Darold,

The Rachio Device Type Handler (DTH) you have depicted is apparently non-compliant with SmartThings's specifications for Capability "Valve".

The value for Valve must be either "open" or "closed" (not "close"; the attribute value is missing the trailing letter "d").

Please contact the developer of the Device Type Handler to have them correct it.

Some newly authorized Things not showing up in ActionTiles lists

Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated 7 years ago 4

There is a bug that may be experienced especially by new users...

After adding your Location (➕) or Authorizing Things to ActionTiles, you may find some of them are not listed in the Location View and the "Add Thing Tile to Panel" dialog box.

This likely only occurs for Things selected from lists "3)" and/or "4)" on the SmartThings Authorize Things page. If the Things are shown in lists "1)"  or "2)", you can workaround this bug by selecting them there instead.

Answer

We have identified the root cause and solution for this and it is undergoing testing and preparation for deployment (hopefully within the next few days). The only possible workaround is in the original topic post above.

Please follow this Topic if the problem is affecting you. In the meantime, all other Things and functionality should be normal.

Bose Soundtouch missing from Authorize Things

WB70 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago 7

I have two Bose Soundtouch 10 speakers under Things in SmartThings, yet they don't appear when attempting to Authorize Things in ActionTiles.

The default Device Handler that they are both using is LAN Bose Soundtouch. I went as far as modifying the two devices in IDE to use Device Handler "Bose Soundtouch" but this didn't change the results. All of my other Things appear under Authorize Things correctly.

These speakers are Works With SmartThings certified so I'm classifying this as a bug as per Terry's instructions.

Thanks,

WB

Neato Robot Vacuum

Can I get my Neato on ActionTiles?

Answer

Espen,

I found the Community Device Type Handler that you are likely using. Indeed, it is missing the proper tagging Capability lines.

https://github.com/alyc100/SmartThingsPublic/blob/master/devicetypes/alyc100/neato-botvac-connected.src/neato-botvac-connected.groovy

Please contact the Developer of the DTH and have him/her add these lines. You can add them to your personal copy of the Device Type Handler code in the meantime.

capability "Sensor"
capability "Actuator"

You can direct the Developer to our KB entry on this topic:

Creation of Application Widget on Phone

WB70 7 years ago in Things & Capabilities updated by Terry (ActionTiles) (Co-Founder) 7 years ago 1

Terry from our conversation earlier and what SmartThings introduced with their Favorites on the Dashboard, versus the existing SmartThings Widget that add ALL SmartThings Routines to it. Maybe there is an opportunity here to recreate as you stated, a version of the existing Widget to be able to access and run all Routine that have been previously added to Action Tiles.

What I think would be even more powerful would be to create this Widget, if it's even possible, to allow modifying of the widget to add / remove specific devices and routines from it, versus how the ST widget contains ALL routines with only a Refresh functional element. Also how for the flexibility of sizing the widget as you see in my screenshots, length and width. The ST default is 2x2 but it allows it to be resized vertically and horizontally.

Here are some screenshots of my ST Widget on my home Page with all he routines. I moved my clock so I could expand the table even larger for you:
