Controlling TV Box & Media Players, Opening Apps?

R Gadson 6 years ago in Things & Capabilities / Non-"Works With SmartThings" devices updated by jaredf33razier 4 years ago 3

Has anyone figured out to control a TV or cable box via using AT?  I am just learning but love AT so far.  Still struggling with adding music as well as I keep receiving an error that AT can't open the other app!

Thanks!

Ive managed to do this with Harmony, but Terry is right about it being a story to do...

You need either a Qnap NAS drive with container station or an RPi that you can use as a server.

Then you can setup up the KukuHarmony API, smartapp and DTH - https://community.smartthings.com/t/release-kukuharmony-dth-and-smartapp-that-support-to-control-devices-in-logitech-harmony-using-harmony-api/87175

You then need to setup virtual buttons in ST for each command, install webcore and link it all together. You need basically an afternoon and all of the above to get it right.

I will warn you upfront, there is quite a bit of lag between pressing buttons and the command actually being received (+-2 to 5 seconds) which makes it pretty useless for anything other than changing  inputs or volume. Youre going to get annoyed trying to use it for navigation.

What Ive instead done, is bought a sufficiently powerful tab (Fire10 works well) to launch the apps directly from AT (Spotify, netflix, plex etc) setup a virtual button that will change the input (HDMI on TV and/or Amp) to switch between cable box, FireTV and then a volume up/down button.

ActionTiles currently supports Devices with these functions (if they are compliant to specifications): Compatible SmartThings Capabilities (Device Type abstractions)

There are some customers exploring creating virtual momentary button Tiles to map to TV Device Type Handlers, but that's quite a lot of trouble. ActionTiles is focused on conforming to SmartThings's paradigms; and as they expand, we follow depending on customer demand. TV control is best left to a specialized App and/or a good-old fashioned remote control; or triggered as a side-effect (e.g., via a SmartThings Routine Tile).

Regarding opening other Apps:  We have a few Topics in the Forum, starting here: Can a Shortcut Tile open an App?

What browser are you using? Fully has special features for handling Apps...

...Terry.
