How to call or activate a Scene? SmartThings Scene Tiles?

SmartThings just added them to their App and you can now set them up.

SmartThings has not provided SmartApps (like ActionTiles) with the ability to directly Activate (trigger, call) a Scene.

Easy Workaround!

The easy workaround is to create a trivial "cover-Routine" for each one of your Scenes and have it trigger the Scene. Perhaps name these Routines "!Scene scene name" or "zScene scene name" so they are all grouped alphabetically in your Routines List.

You can then use these "Scene Routines" like any Routine:

  • As a Routines (plural) List Tile
  • and/or Individual Routine Tile(s)

Just like a Routine, a Scene is a "momentary pushbutton". It does not change state when you tap it. There is no "Scene On" / "Scene Off". A Scene is "activated" just as a Routine is "executed".

If SmartThings opens up a direct API to Scenes, we would make them their own new special Tile Type... though they would act the same as Routine Tiles anyway. We would just give them different default icons!

Does the fact that Scenes became visible to Google Home this morning, signify somehow that SmartThings is opening up a direct API to Scenes?

The "cover-Routine" workaround certainly works...but it is pretty redundant...and I know I'll find myself 6 months or a year down the road confused, when I try to reverse engineer it and make changes for some reason.

Nope; It just means that SmartThings has a direct API to Scenes which they are quite willing to use internally, but has still not shared it with Partners and Community developers; (the Google Home and Alexa-Echo integrations are both written by SmartThings internally and not by the Partners themselves.)

How do I get my Smartthings Routines to show up in ActionTiles??  I've added Routines to do exactly what I want with groups of lights (and tested it and verified that all is working) but when I add Routines and click the button nothing shows up.  Can someone explain the steps involved in getting the Routines added to ActionTiles?

Got it figured out.  Not sure if it's because I was using both the new Smartthings App and the Classic App or what.  But I logged out of the newer app and uninstalled it so that I'm now only using the Classic App and then I refreshed my Location and my routines showed up.  Good to go!

When adding Routines, be sure to follow-up using the My Locations / location / SYNCHRONIZE button in ActionTiles.
