Foreign International Extended Unicode (European, Asian, etc) ÅÄÖ characters not being imported from SmartThings Thing labels

Hi, live in Sweden and have the letters ÅÄÖ in the alphabet. After the last update, these letters appear as a question mark. Can I do anything to fix this myself? Exampel: Vder

Confirmed Bug

Hi Hans,

Thanks for reporting this issue with foreign/extended unicode characters not being imported from SmartThings Thing Labels:

  • We are investigating the root cause. It is certainly an undesired and unforeseen effect of our v6.4 SmartApp update Tuesday, but we don't know yet if it is fixable.
  • In the meantime, a partial workaround is to use the custom Tile Label option on each affected Tile in each Panel. Use the Tile Settings menu in the Tiles List on the Panel Builder Page.

Thanks,

...Terry.

It was easy to fix, works for me! Thanks for the quick reply and a great app. Keep up the good work!

This has not been a particularly high priority item for us due to the very small number of Customers affected.  SmartThings is only sold in North America and the UK. This makes it much more like a Feature Request than a "bug".

We don't post progress reports or ETAs. This will be fixed when it is fixed. Ref: When are Feature Ideas in the Forum going to be implemented?

Are you sure "custom tile label option" would help for a tile that has constant changing labels; e.g. media playlists?

Definitely not. (ie, You are correct).

The workaround mentioned here is only a partial solution – It does not fix text values like track name.

Thanks. I've noticed this bug has been open for quite a while. Have you made any headway?

+ 1 for a fix. We are quite a number of nordic Smartthings-users now, even though ST isn't officially supported outside UK. Although the wrong characters isn't a showstopper, it's certainly an annoyance. This is a kind of thing that had me sitting on the fence for a while before i decided to buy an Actiontiles license.

The workaround to set a custom title for a routine works fine, so it is clear that you can save that content in unicode just fine on your side. It is clearly a problem in the api towards ST.

Problem is apparent when I add a tile which lists all my routines. There you just fetch the basic ST-titles and it doesn't look good. (They do on the ST-side) WAF is low for systems that doesn't display correctly...

\u00E5 is a unicode encoded å. I am a developer and being norwegian I deal with this every day. Unicode is the way to go, but you have to use it all the way through... :)  I might be able to help if you need it.

Thanks for the note, Holger.

We're aware of how to fix the issue (it's not a technical problem, just a matter of updating a lot of code) and we intend to do it. This is a low priority, however, as only a small fraction of our Customers use non-English / non-ASCII characters.
